Ford & Harrison Partner Buena Vista Lyons Receives Board Certification in Labor & Employment Law

Date   Feb 15, 2011

Dallas – Ford & Harrison LLP, a national labor and employment law firm, is pleased to announce that Buena Vista Lyons, a partner in the firm's Dallas office, recently attained Board Certification in Labor and Employment Law from The Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS).

Board certification recognizes lawyers' knowledge, skills and proficiency in a specific area of law, as well as professionalism and ethics in practice. It is a voluntary designation program certifying Texas attorneys in 21 specific areas of law. Board Certified attorneys must be licensed for at least five years, devote a required percentage of practice to a specialty area for at least three years, attend continuing education seminars, pass an evaluation by fellow lawyers and judges and pass a six-hour written examination. To remain certified, attorneys must apply for recertification every five years.

"The Court firmly supports the certification process," Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace B. Jefferson said. "Through certification, lawyers provide enhanced expertise to the most complex problems, and in that way assure Texas citizens of unparalleled competence in the resolution of important disputes. The certification board, and those certified by it, stand as a proud statement to the Texas legal community."

Lyons represents employers in multi-state employment litigation matters. Her litigation experience includes defending employers against state and federal employment–related claims under Title VII, TCHRA, ADEA, FMLA and ADA; FLSA collective actions; retaliatory discharges; and breach of employment contracts and non-compete agreements. She also counsels management on multi-state, federal and international employment practice issues; prepares and reviews anti-harassment and FMLA/ADA training programs for managers and employees; reviews personnel handbooks, policies and procedures; and prepares reduction-in-force plans and severance/ retention plans. She also analyzes federal and multi-state wage and hour matters. Lyons received her J.D. from University of Texas School of Law in 1996.

"I made the commitment last year to sit for my board certification examination to not only challenge myself, but to enhance my knowledge of some of the more complex labor and employment law issues that our clients may face in order to provide them with the best service possible," commented Lyons. "My board certification is part of my ongoing commitment to serve the clients of Ford & Harrison with excellence."
