OUR PEOPLE

Stefan Black is the Office Managing Partner for FordHarrison's LA office and focuses his legal practice on representing management in labor and employment law disputes.

He has defended clients in a variety of matters including claims for discrimination, harassment, failure to accommodate and failure to engage in the interactive process, retaliation, and ERISA. Stefan also defends employers in labor arbitrations and disputes before the National Labor Relations Board.

A significant portion of Stefan's practice is devoted to counseling employers regarding all aspects of the employment relationship including effectuating terminations, wage and hour inquiries, the ADA, the FMLA and COBRA.  He has also assisted employers with the drafting of employment agreements, severance agreements, covenants not to compete, employee handbooks and policies and ADA medical questionnaires.

Stefan has a substantial amount of experience litigating wage and hour disputes in California.   In particular, he has handled more than 20 class actions and/or representative actions under PAGA. He has successfully opposed class certification on numerous occasions, successfully mitigated actions using arbitration, directed and participated in declaration gathering projects, and successfully mediated class and PAGA actions.  In addition, Stefan regularly advises clients on California wage and hour matters and drafts employee handbooks and policies.  

Prior to joining FordHarrison, Stefan was an associate at a large general practice firm based in Virginia where he handled employment and commercial disputes for clients in a variety of industries. 

Representative Experience
  • Obtained a defense verdict on behalf of an international hotel chain in a consolidated meal and rest break action before the Department of Labor Standards Enforcement.
  • Successfully defeated class certification twice on behalf of a national title insurance company.
  • Led the defense in a series of representative actions filed against a national restaurant chain.  
  • Successfully negotiated nuisance-value settlements in PAGA actions filed against an international hotel chain.
  • Successfully defended tow truck and recovery company against wage and hour claim challenging exempt status of company's drivers.
  • Successfully defended IT consulting company from claims by a former employee alleging fraud, tortious interference, conspiracy, and defamation.
  • Successfully defended tile distributor from claim by former sales representative for unpaid commissions.
  • Successfully represented security company in suit involving claims for unpaid overtime arising from an alternative workweek schedule.
  • Substantial experience representing entities from various industries to enforce trade secret protections, covenants not to compete, covenants not to solicit customers, and covenants not to solicit employees.
