General Information:

Washington's subway system is called the "Metro". The schedule of operation is:

  • Monday - Thursday:

The system operates from 5:30 a.m. until midnight (later on July 4th and for special events).

The last trains leave downtown stations approximately 12:01 a.m. - 12:15 a.m. heading in all directions.

  • Friday & Saturday:

    The system operates from 5:30 a.m. until 2:00 a.m.

The last trains leave downtown stations approximately 2:01 a.m. - 2:15 a.m. heading in all directions.

  • Sunday & most holidays:

The system operates from 8:00 a.m. until midnight.

The last trains leave downtown stations approximately 12:01 a.m. - 12:15 a.m. heading in all directions.

The last trains leave the end-of-the-line stations in the suburbs around 11:30 p.m. (1:30 a.m. on Friday & Saturday) heading downtown. Exact departure times for all last trains, in both/all directions, are posted at attendants' booths in all stations in the system. Announcements of "last train" are made in the stations.

Each passenger, age 5 and over, must have a separate fare card. Fare cards can be purchased at fare card machines at all metro stations. Station attendants have no access to cash and cannot make change. Minimum fare is $1.10. System maps near the fare card machines in all stations show the fare to travel from that station to any other station in the system during rush hours and non-rush hours. You do not need to purchase a fare card for every trip. It is wise to purchase a fare card for a round-trip or for future trips.

Fare card machines will take $1, 5, 10 and 20 bills and coins. They will give you change on request, but no refund of unused value. If you insert $20, the fare card machine will give you a $2 bonus. A fare card can be used indefinitely until the value is depleted. A low-value fare card can be inserted into a fare card machine for you to add more money and get a new fare card.

You must insert your fare card in a turnstile at the beginning and end of every trip. After you insert your fare card in a turnstile, be sure to take it back. At a turnstile for the handicapped, your fare card returns at the same place where you inserted it. At the end of your trip, the value of that trip will be deducted from the value of your fare card and the remaining value will be shown on the fare card when you take it back. If the value/remaining value on your fare card is the exact amount of your trip, the turnstile will capture your fare card.

If your fare card has enough value for a minimum value trip ($1.10), but insufficient value for the trip you just made (e.g.: $2.40), the turnstile will not open the gate. The turnstile's window will tell you how much more value you need to add to your fare card. The fare card will be returned and you will have to go to an "Add Fare" machine and add more value to the fare card in order to exit the system.
