BREAKING: San Antonio Postpones Its Paid Sick Leave Ordinance and Legal Challenge to Dallas' Ordinance Imminent

Date   Jul 24, 2019

In response to the lawsuit filed against the City of San Antonio regarding its paid sick leave ordinance, the City of San Antonio has agreed to postpone implementation of the ordinance until December 1, 2019. A Bexar County judge signed the agreed order on July 24, 2019. Accordingly, employers with San Antonio employees have been given a few months before they must enact paid sick leave policies for San Antonio employees (subject to any decision by the Texas Supreme Court on this issue).

As to Dallas’ ordinance, the City has finally issued its Rules and FAQs about the ordinance. You can find those here and here. But it looks like a legal challenge to the Dallas ordinance is imminent. The City has been sent a letter by Texas Public Policy Foundation demanding that the city delay implementation of its ordinance until December 1 as well. The City has until 5pm July 24 to respond.  We will update you if the City of Dallas decides to follow San Antonio’s lead.

We will continue to keep you updated on this issue. If you have any questions about the ordinances or other labor or employment issues, please feel free to contact the author of this Alert, Rachel Z.
