About the Sessions:

Navigating Workplace Leave Laws: Best Practices for Handling the Interplay Between FMLA, ADA, Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, and Workers’ Compensation Leave Requests
Presentation Description: Both federal and state laws provide a wide range of types of protected leave, which allow employees to take time away from work to attend to personal matters. Understanding what laws apply when a qualifying event occurs can be tricky. Even the most generous of employers can unintentionally run afoul of the law. This interactive session we will equip HR professionals with knowledge to handle leave requests lawfully. You will learn:

  • How to identify which leave law applies to avoid costly legal mistakes,
  • Best practices on documentation, and
  • How to support employees while maintaining operational needs.

Speaker: R. Michelle Tatum-Bush - Partner, FordHarrison LLP

It’s About Time: Key Steps in Conducting Your Own Wage/Hour Audit
Presentation Description: Louis Wilson will present an informative overview and workshop to help HR professionals conduct their own internal wage/hour audits, with a particular focus on the most common pitfalls and mistakes made by employers, as well as review of the latest developments and guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). The session will include a review of what duties and positions qualify for exempt status from overtime obligations under the FLSA, independent contractor myths and misclassification issues, when must employees be paid for meal breaks, training and waiting time, permissible time clock rounding practices, and employer record keeping obligations under the FLSA.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Helping HR professionals conduct their own wage/hour audits to ensure compliance with the FLSA and state laws,
  2. Developing a deeper understanding of the requirements imposed on employers by the FLSA and common misconceptions and pitfalls to avoid, and
  3. Helping HR professionals and employers understand options and obligations in addressing the status and compensation of exempt and non-exempt employees.
