About the Program
You receive a summons from a court stating you have a certain amount of time to respond to a complaint filed against your company by a former employee. Now what? Litigation can be terrifying, especially in employment cases where emotions often run high.
This course, presented by Employment Law attorney Jacquelyn Thompson, aims to help alleviate the dread and confusion that occurs when litigating an employment matter in Virginia. The course offers an overview of what to expect from the time you receive notice of a lawsuit through trial.
Learning Objectives:
- Examine the differences between state court versus federal court and whether removal is appropriate
- Explore what it’s like to litigate in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, otherwise known as the “Rocket Docket”
- Review how to analyze the validity of a complaint to determine whether to move to dismiss it or answer it
- Identify how to properly track a case from the filing of a complaint, through discovery, to pretrial matters and trial preparation
- Discuss how to prepare for motions practice in Virginia
